2017 APIASF Summit: ELEVATE recap

Over 500 participants attended our inaugural Summit: ELEVATE on September 29-30 at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington, DC to "Empower Leader Engagement, Vision, and Advancement Through Education." Students, professionals, campuses, leaders, and community supporters gathered to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the creation of the Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-serving Institutions (AANAPISI) designation, highlight the successes of AANAPISIs and ongoing challenges, and shared best practices for supporting and empowering the next generation of leaders.

This year, we expanded upon our Higher Education summit, adding an additional half-day AANAPISI workshop for campus administrators and staff, a Summit Gala and Silent Auction, and a full day Leadership Academy for high school and college students. At our Summit Gala, we honored the following individuals for their commitment to increasing access to higher education to our Asian and Pacific Islander American students:

  • Lisa Hasegawa, Assistant Director for Federal Affairs, University of California Los Angeles
  • Honorable Dr. Robert Underwood, President, University of Guam
  • Honorable Esther Puakela Kia'aina, Executive Director, Pacific Basin Development Council
  • Georgette "Gigi" Dixon, Senior Vice President and Director of Strategic Partnerships, Wells Fargo Foundation
  • Sarah Bauder, Senior Program Officer, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

Here's what participants had to say about Summit:ELEVATE:

"It was so good to be a part of the APIASF Summit this past weekend. The entire summit was executed flawlessly. I learned a lot and met colleagues who share similar struggles as AANAPISI's in higher education." - an AANAPISI Workshop participant
"I found this summit to be very helpful and very rejuvenating, especially for being in my last year as an undergraduate. I feel very empowered, and I am ready to go back to school and empower my fellow community members and finish my last year strong and confident." - a student participant of the Leadership Academy

The Asian & Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund (APIASF) was founded by leaders throughout the community with a vision to see all Asian and Pacific Islander Americans have access to higher education and resources that cultivate their academic, personal and professional success. We thank everyone for making this year a particularly memorable event and hope to see you at next year's summit!
